I struggled a bit through the material that you have clarified in this post and I was just about to ask why a sufficiently small $C_a$ will not wind round $0$ when I found your document and realized that $C_a$ is winding around $a$, not $0$, so it would miss $0$ when it gets small. Two thumbs up!
