After discussing this exercise with Gary, I realised that I needed to make it clear in my solution that although to obtain the first result in the exercise there are no restrictions on $a$ - it can generally be complex, to obtain the second result we assume that $0<a<1$ and so $a$ is real, and the integral on the left hand side of the second result is a real integral.
