In this section on page 73 the Binomial Theorem is introduced as equation (14). Exercises 16, 17,18 of chapter 2 on pages 115-6 show how the theorem is also true for negative integer values of $n$, and then for all rational powers.
In the paragraph below (14) on page 73 Needham writes:
"Later we shall use other methods to establish a still more general version of (14) in which the power $n$ is allowed to be a complex number!"
This is in fact a reference to chapters 4 and 5 and in particular exercise 13 of chapter 5.
